SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and Wingate split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Newman Park.  Wingate took the opener 4-0, while the Catawba Indians grabbed game two, 5-2.  The third-ranked Indians are 10-1 overall and 2-1 in the SAC, while the Bulldogs are 6-6 and 1-2.

Olen Little tossed a three-hit shutout to give Wingate the win in the opener.  He walked two and fanned five.  He finally got some offensive support in the fourth when the Bulldogs plated a pair of runs to break a scoreless tie.

In the fourth, Brian Yeung led off with a single and stole second.  He scored on a single by Blake Prince to break the ice.  Michael Benitez added a two-out single to double the lead.  The Bulldogs plated a unearned run in both the fifth and sixth innings to go up 4-0.

Catawba had one big threat.  Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) led off the sixth with a single and Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) doubled with one out.  Little got out of the trouble by retiring the next two batters.

Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) pitched Catawba to a win in the nightcap.  The senior pitched into the seventh, allowing two runs, one earned, off seven hits with four strikeouts.  Will Johnson (Faith, NC/E. Rowan HS) got one out in the seventh and Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) recorded the final out to grab his first save.

Cameron Cockman (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS/UNC Wilmington) put the Indians on top with a two-out double in the second that scored Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS), who had doubled with one out.  Catawba broke the game open with a four-run fifth.

Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) led off the fifth with a single and scored on a double by Kronenfield.  Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) doubled home a run and Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) capped the frame with a two-run homer.

Whitley took a shutout to the seventh, but Brad Cherry led off the inning with a home run.  The Bulldogs got another run on an error before McClintock got the final out with the tying run at the plate.  Thomas Spitz had three hits for Wingate in game two.

Catawba will be idle until next weekend when the Indians travel to Newberry for a weekend series.  The series will open with a game on Friday night at 6 p.m.
