Conte Scores Three Goals in Women's Lacrosse Loss to Belmont Abbey
SALISBURY, NC -- Belmont Abbey used a big second half to pull away from host Catawba and record a 21-9 win in in women’s lacrosse action on Wednesday night at Shuford Stadium. The Crusaders win their opener, while the Catawba Indians fall to 0-3.
The game was tied at 6-all late in the first half, but Belmont Abbey grabbed an 8-6 edge at the break on goals from Reese Gassie and Katy Connery. The Crusaders continued the run into the second with the opening four goals to increase their lead to 12-6. Elyse Mohn had two goals in the run.
Belmont Abbey went on to lead 16-7 with ten minutes left when Catawba got consecutive goals from Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John’s Catholic HS) and Juliana Conte (Hampton, Ontario, CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic HS) to get within 16-9 with nine minutes to go. That would be as close as Catawba could get as the Crusaders tallied the final five goals.
Megan Patton led Belmont Abbey with five goals. Mohn added four goals with Connery and MacKenzie Miller each scoring three times. Conte had a team-high three goals for Catawba. Jones and Chelsey Bauer (Tampa, FL/Plant HS) had two goals for the Lady Indians. Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) made 14 saves in goal for the Lady Indians.
Catawba will return to Shuford Stadium on Sunday afternoon, hosting Converse at 1 p.m.
