Men's Basketball Cans A Dozen 3-Pointers in Loss to Newberry
SALISBURY, NC -- Newberry got 25 points from Brandon Riley (Baltimore, MD) and a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds from Demarkus Smith (Johnston, SC) in claiming an 85-77 victory over host Catawba in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Wolves even their record at 12-12 overall and 8-8 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 8-16 and 5-11.
Neither team enjoyed more than a six-point lead until the final 10 minutes. Newberry went on a 10- run with the game tied at 63 and built a double-digit edge at 73-63 on a pair of free throws by Riley with 6:36 left. Catawba rallied back, scoring nine straight points to within 73-72 after a layup by Nick Houston (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) with 3:26 remaining.
Catawba went cold from there, not scoring again until the final minute after Newberry had gone on top by a dozen. Smith put the Wolves up 75-72 then Riley scored the final 10 points for Newberry including a three-point with 1:14 to go for an 80-72 lead.
Four Wolves reached double figures as Mitch Riggs (Langwarrin, AUSTRALIA) and Aegir Steinarsson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) each had 13 points. Steinarsson canned four three-pointers, while Riggs hit three from long range. Newberry held a 41-34 edge on the glass and grabbed 13 on the offensive end.
Catawba put five players in double figures. Reggie Perkins (Greensboro, NC/Phillips Exeter HS) scored a team-high 16 points, while Elon Edwards (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) had 14 points, six assists and five rebounds. Lee Martin (Mt. Airy, NC/N. Surry HS/Hargrave) added 13 points and Tyrece Little (Greenville, NC/Rose HS) posted a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Catawba shot 61% (19-of-31) in the opening half to grab a 46-43 edge at the break. The Indians made only 38% in the second half.
Catawba closes out its home schedule on Wednesday night, hosting Carson-Newman at 8 p.m.
