Baseball Drops Series Opener at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Newberry held off Catawba to take a 7-5 win in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday night at the Smith Road Complex. The Wolves improve to 8-6 overall and 2-0 in the SAC, while the fourth-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 10-2 and 2-2.
Newberry went on top 7-1 and held off a late rally to grab the win. The Wolves struck for two runs in the first and never trailed. Albert Baur doubled home a run with two outs and scored on a single by Eric Barbieri. The Wolves added three more in the fourth. Jermale Paige and Brandon Sheridan started the inning with back-to-back doubles and Newberry also scored on a wild pitch and a passed ball.
Catawba had only three hits off Newberry starter Alex Roberts, who fanned 10 in seven innings. The Indians made things interesting in the ninth, scoring four times and getting the tying run to the plate before Wesley Camp got the final out for the save.
Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) had two hits and a RBI for Catawba. Danny Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS) and Cameron Cockman (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS/UNC Wilmington) also drove in runs for the Indians.
Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) took his first loss of the season. He allowed six runs (four earned) off nine hits over five innings. Sheridan had three hits and three RBI for Newberry. Barbieri had a pair of hits along with Camp.
The teams will complete the three-game series with a doubleheader starting at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
