Softball Takes Wins Over LeMoyne and #4 North Georgia
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba grabbed two wins on Sunday afternoon in the Catawba Invitational Softball Tournament at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians started with a 1-0 win over LeMoyne in nine innings, then upset #4 North Georgia 2-1. The wins improve the Lady Indians to 10-5.
Catawba scored the lone run against LeMoyne (1-1) on a sacrifice fly from Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NC/Madison HS). Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) started the inning at second and went to third on a bunt single by Michaela Boyd (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS). Gerone followed with the winning fly ball.
Freshman Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) pitched the win. She surrendered just two hits, walked two and fanned a dozen. She stranded the extra-inning runner at second without advancing in both the eighth and ninth. Only one runner reached third in the game for the Dolphins.
Sarah Harrison was the tough-luck loser. She allowed just the unearned run off three hits and struck out 11.
Tysinger was also in the circle for the upset of the nationally-ranked Saints (14-3). She improved to 8-0, allowing just a single run on five hits with eight strikeouts. Courtney Poole (10-1) suffered her first loss for North Georgia. She allowed two runs (one earned) off eight hits with five strikeouts.
Catawba jumped on top in the third innings when Emily Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) led off with a home run. The Saints answered that run in the bottom half of the inning on a two-out single by Callie Fernandez.
The Lady Indians scored the decisive run in the fourth. Morgan Brann (Beulaville, NC/E. Duplin HS) and Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) singled and moved to second and third on a throwing error. After dropping a foul ball off the bat of Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, SW Randolph HS), the sophomore made the Saints pay with a single off the pitchers glove that plated pinch-runner Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS).
Tysinger made the run stand up. The freshman sat down the final 12 batters she faced after a bunt single by Sarah Johnson to start the fourth.
Gibbs and Huneycutt each had two hits for the lady Indians. Fernandez had a pair of hits for North Georgia.
Catawba is scheduled to play Massachusetts-Lowell on Monday at 11 a.m. at Salisbury Community Park.
