Baseball Swept Away By Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Newberry completed a weekend sweep by taking both ends of a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader against fourth-ranked Catawba on Sunday at the Smith Road Complex. The Wolves won the opener 7-5 and claimed the nightcap 5-4 in 10 innings. Newberry improves to 10-6 overall and 4-0 in the SAC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 10-4 and 2-4.
The opener was much like Saturday's contest. Newberry took a 7-1 lead into the final inning when Catawba made things close by scoring four runs and getting the tying run to first base. Wesley Camp got the final out once again for the save.
A two-run homer from Ryan Cranmer gave the Wolves a 2-0 lead after one frame. Newberry added four more runs in third to break the game open. Two runs scored on infield singles before Nolan Schrenker capped the frame with a two-run single.
With two outs and nobody on after a double play in the seventh, Catawba got off the deck. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) singled home two runs. Following a walk, Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) singled home two more. That would bring in Camp to end the rally.
Catawba twice took late leads in game two, but Newberry was able to answer. With the game tied at 1-1 after five, Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) tripled with one out and scored on an infield single by Hawks. Jon Wallace (Salisbury, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg) added a second run on a single.
Jermale Paige started a two-out rally for Newberry in its half of the sixth with a single and came around to score on a single by JoJo Bradley. Andy Vogel singled home the tying run. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) gave the Indians a 4-3 lead with a two-out single in the eighth, but with two outs Vogel again tied the game with an infield single.
Paige reached on a fielder's choice in 10th and went all the way to third on a failed pick-off attempt. He scored on a sacrifice fly by Brandan Sheridan. Cole Cromer got the win for Newberry. He tossed three and a third innings of relief allowing just one unearned run off two hits.
Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) had four hits for Catawba in the nightcap. Hawks, who had two RBI in the opener, had two hits and another RBI in game two.
Catawba returns to league play next weekend as the Indians travel to Anderson for a weekend series that begins on Friday night.
