Softball Runs Win Streak to Six Straight
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba picked up a 5-1 win over Massachusetts-Lowell on Monday afternoon at Salisbury Community Park to close out play in the Catawba Invitational Softball Tournament. The Catawba Indians claim their sixth straight win to improve to 11-5. The River Hawks fall to 1-3.
Catawba used a pair of errors to grab an early lead in the top of the first. Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Co. HS) reached on an error to start the game and came around to score on a double by Morgan Brann (Beulaville, NC/E. Duplin HS). Brann scored on an overthrow after a double by Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NC/Madison HS). Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) added solo home run in the second for a 3-0 edge.
The River Hawks got a run back in the fourth, but Selena Ashley (Walkertown, NC/ E. Forsyth HS) pitched her way out of a jam to allow just the single run. A walk to start the frame was followed by singles from Ally Greene and Ariana Darcy to make it 3-1. With runners at second and third and no outs, Ashley got a pair ground balls to third and Huneycutt threw out two runners at the plate. The sophomore ended the inning on a grounder to second.
The Lady Indians stretched their lead in the sixth. Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) and Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, SW Randolph HS) started the inning with singles. After an intentional walk to Huneycutt with two outs, pinch hitter Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) singled home two runs for a 5-1 lead.
Ashley kept the River Hawks at bay over the final two innings to improve to 3-2. She surrendered the lone run on five hits while walking one and fanning four. Catawba had eight hits, but no player had more than one.
Catawba travels to Limestone for a doubleheader on Wednesday starting at 2 p.m.
