Softball Sweeps Limestone For Eight Straight Wins
GAFFNEY, SC -- Catawba swept a softball doubleheader from host Limestone on Wednesday afternoon at Saints Field. The Catawba Indians won 6-3 in the opener and took a 3-1 decision over nine innings in game two. The Lady Indians improve to 13-5, winning for the eighth straight time. The Saints fall to 2-10.
Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NC/Madison HS) got Catawba off to a quick start in game with a two-out, two-run homer in the first. Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Co. HS) knocked home a run in the second to up the margin to 4-3.
Limestone closed within a run Kirstyn Burleson singles home two runs with two outs and Dallas Heaton singled home another. Morgan Brann (Beulaville, NC/E. Duplin HS) singled home a run for Catawba in the fifth and pitcher Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) helped herself out with a solo homer in the sixth for the 6-3 lead.
Tysinger allowed only one hit after the three-run third. She picked up the win, scattering four hits over the seven frames and fanning 11. Tysinger, Terry and Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) each had two hits.
Neither team could score over the scheduled seven innings of game two. Terry gave Catawba the lead in the eighth on a sacrifice fly, but Limestone came up with the tying run on a single by Heaton. Tysinger, who entered with one out and a runner at third, struck out two batters with runners at second and third to end the frame.
Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, SW Randolph HS) collected the winning hit for Catawba in the ninth, driving in two runs with a triple. Tysinger hit a batter in the bottom of the ninth, but struck out the side to grab the win and up her record to 10-0. Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) shutout the Saints for seven innings. She allowed just four hits and an unearned run over seven and a third innings of work.
Kovalcin delivered two more hits in game two. Brann and Hyder also had two hits. Heaton and Ashley Cox had a pair of hits for Limestone.
Catawba returns to action this weekend, playing five games at the Mid-South Classic in Sparta burg, SC, which starts on Friday.
