Bats Explode as Baseball Finishes Weekend Sweep at Anderson
ANDERSON, SC -- Catawba completed a weekend sweep of host Anderson by taking both ends of Saturday afternoon's doubleheader in South Atlantic Conference baseball action at Memorial Stadium. The 26th-ranked Catawba Indians won by the scores of 12-2 and 12-6 to improve to 13-4 overall and 5-4 in the SAC. The Trojans drop to 5-15 and 1-8.
Catawba took another early lead to open the doubleheader, scoring three times in the first. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) and Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) had back-to-back RBI doubles to get the Indians rolling. When Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) connected for a grand slam it was 7-0 in the fourth.
Anderson, who was sat down in order over the first three frames by John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS), got on the board to start the fourth on a leadoff homer by Josh Hickman. The Indians tacked on five more runs in the eighth to really break things open. Satterfield and Kronenfeld each had a RBI in that outburst as well.
Tuttle logged eight innings to improve to 3-2. He allowed a run off five hits with no walks and 10 strikeouts. Dula collected three hits for Catawba, while Satterfield, Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) all had two hits.
Catawba pulled out a wild game two on the back of three two-run homers. It was two-run shots by Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) and Hawks in the fifth that put the Indians on top to stay.
The Indians had scored three times in the first for the third time in the series, but Anderson struck back with five in the bottom half. Kronenfeld had the big blow for the Indians with the first two-run homer. Eric Sanderson had a two-run homer for Anderson and the Trojans capitalized on a pair of Catawba errors to add three more in the frame to take the lead
Catawba pulled even with single runs in the second and third. Dula drove home the second-inning run on a bases-loaded ground out, while Hawks tied the game with a two-out single in the third. Anderson picked up a run on a wild pitch in the fourth to lead 6-5.
Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) led off the Catawba fifth with a triple and scored on Brooks' two-run shot that put the Tribe up 7-6. Hawks made it 9-6 when he greeted reliever Kyle Francis with another two-run homer. Zubillaga singled home a run to cap the five-run frame.
Hawks finished off his productive day with a two-run single in the sixth for the final margin. Hawks collected three hits, drove in five runs and scored three times in game two. Brooks had two hits and also scored three times.
Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) picked up the win (3-0) as he pitched into the fifth. He allowed six runs (three earned) off five hits and six walks over four and two-thirds innings. Ross McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) recorded a save as he worked two and a third innings of hitless relief.
Catawba heads to USC Aiken on Tuesday for a 6 p.m. contest. It marks the first mid-week game for the Indians this season.
