Baseball Can't Overcome Early Deficit Agaisnt #6 USCA
AIKEN, SC -- Catawba fell behind #6 USC Aiken early and could not quite catch up, dropping a 7-6 decision in baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Hernandez Stadium. The Pacers improve to 14-2, while the 25th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 13-5.
Aiken grabbed a 2-0 lead after one inning. The Pacers got the first run on a groundout by Bill Gerstenslager then got a two-out RBI single from Ty Barkell. Barkell went on to collected three hits and three RBI in the contest.
Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) cut the lead in half with a solo home run for Catawba in the second, but USCA scored a run in the second and added two in the third on a homer by Barkell. Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) hit his own two-run homer for the Indians to cut the margin to 5-3 in the fifth.
The Indians tried to rally in the final inning. Down 7-3 in the eighth, Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) singled home a run and Hawks plated a second on a ground out to make it 7-5. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) doubled in the ninth and scored when Zach Smith (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS/Pitt CC) reached on a two-out error. Taylor Glover was able to get the final out on a pop up by Brooks to end it.
Dula had three hits for the Indians. Furr and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) both had two hits with Hawks driving in three runs. JJ Loker joined Barkell with three hits for USCA. Brandon Millhouse and John Fidanza each picked up two hits.
The two teams will play again on Wednesday night at 6 p.m.
