Lomascolo Equals Win Mark as Baseball Wins Brevard Series Opener

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba used a 7-run second inning to blow past Brevard 13-0 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday night a Newman Park.  The 25th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 15-5 overall and 6-4 in the SAC, while the Tornados fall to 9-12 and 5-5.

Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) headlined the win for the Indians.  He threw seven innings of shutout ball to claim his 31st career win to tie him with Tim Smith atop the Catawba all-time win list.  He also became just the third Indian hurler to surpass 300 career strikeouts in the victory.

Cameron Cockman (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS/UNC Wilmington) got Catawba on the board in the second with a one-out, two-run double.  Three batters later with two outs, Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) picked up a pair of RBI when his single got three runs home.  Catawba never looked back.

Brevard threatened to get back into the game as in both the third and fourth innings the first two Tornado batters would reach base.  Lomascolo never allowed one to reach third posting five strikeouts in those two frames and going over the 300 mark while fanning the side in the fourth.

Lomascolo scattered five hits, walked one and recorded nine strikeouts to improve to 5-1.  Kevin Hamilton took the loss for Brevard, falling to 4-1.  He could not get out of the second inning, allowing seven runs, five earned, off four hits with three walks and five strikeouts.

Cockman and Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) were the two Indians to collect two hits on the night.  Cockman, Dula and Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) all drove in two runs.  Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) had a solo homer.

The teams are set to complete the three-game series with a doubleheader on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
