TAMPA, FL -- Tampa used a big fourth quarter to put away visiting Catawba and claim a 17-10 victory in Deep South Conference men's lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Pepin Stadium.  The Spartans improve to 5-2 overall and 4-1 in the DSC, while the Catawba Indians fall to 2-4 and 0-3.

Tampa jumped out to a 4-1 lead after a quarter, but Catawba scored three quick goal to start the second to pull even.  Two of those came from John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS), who led the Indians with five tallies on the day.  Tampa answered those Catawba goals, scoring five straight and went to the break with a 9-5 edge.

Scheich had scored for Catawba with just a second left in the first half and the Indians used that momentum to scored three more to open the third quarter and were within 9-8 at the 5:17 mark of the period.  Tampa again pulled away.  The Spartans scored two goals to close the quarter then started a big fourth quarter with the opening four tallied to lead 15-8 with four minutes left.

Tampa peppered the Catawba goal, outshooting the Indians 51-28.  The Spartans also grabbed a 47-28 edge in ground balls.  Pete Wesselman (Charlotte, NC/Providence HS/Stevenson) and Christian Klimczyk (Linthicum, MD/Cardinal Gibbons School) split halves in goal for the Indians.  Each made six saves.

Catawba will next travel to Queens on Wednesday for a 7 p.m. game.
