Terry Helps Softball to Split at Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba split its opening South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader with host Carson-Newman on Saturday afternoon at the Lady Eagles Softball Complex. The Lady Eagles won the opener 3-1, while Catawba grabbed a 9-3 win in game two. The split puts Catawba at 18-8 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. Carson-Newman falls to 16-6 and 1-1.
Carson-Newman scored all three of its run in the fourth inning to take the opener. Catawba had jumped ahead in the first as Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) led off with a double and came around to score on a sacrifice fly by Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS).
The Lady Eagles put together four straight singles to start the fourth inning with Bethany Davis singling home two runs to put C-N on top. Braleigh Angel singled home the final run. Catawba tried to rally. Terry tripled to lead off the sixth, but was erased at home trying to score on a groundout. The Lady Indians also got two on with one out in the seventh to no avail.
Cassie Lyons improved to 7-5 with the win for Carson-Newman. She allowed seven hits and struck out three. Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) took the loss, giving up eight hits (five in that fourth inning) and fanned 10.
Tysinger and Terry had two hits for Catawba. Brittany Hefner collected three this for the Lady Eagles, while Bri Shoemake added two hits.
Catawba rallied from an early 1-0 deficit in game two to gain the split. In the second, Catawba benefitted from three C-N errors to plate five runs. Casey Baucom (Marshville, NC/Piedmont HS) singled home the tying run then Terry doubled home two. The final two runs scored on an error.
Carson-Newman got an unearned run in the third, but Catawba was back at it in the fifth with a three-run frame. Terry picked up two more RBI on a triple. She finished the nightcap with three hits and four RBI. Baucom also had three hits and Hyder a pair of RBI.
Tysinger got the win to improve to 13-2. She allowed seven hits and two earned runs, collecting six strikeouts. Kaitie Sims took her first loss for Carson-Newman after nine wins to start the season.
Catawba heads to Coker on Monday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
