Baseball Wins Fifth Straight With 11-3 Victory Over Wingate
WINGATE, NC -- Catawba claimed a non-league over Wingate by an 11-3 count in baseball action on Tuesday night at Christopher Stadium and Plyler Field. The 14th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 18-5 with their fifth straight win. The Bulldogs fall to 14-12.
Leading 1-0 after an inning, Catawba broke through with four runs in the second. Danny Parisi (Shirley, NC/Longwood HS) doubled home two runs and Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) singled home two more as the Indians jumped to a 5-0 lead.
Wingate got a run in the second on a Jason Hunter single and two in the third to cut the gap to 5-3. Thomas Spitz doubled home a run and later scored on a passed ball. Catawba came right back with two of its own in the fourth. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) brought home a pair of runs as his single to left was misplayed into a two-base error.
Cameron Cockman (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS/UNC Wilmington) and two relievers kept Wingate silent after the third. Cockman tossed six innings, allowing three runs (two earned) off six hits with five strikeouts to improve to 3-2 on the year. Graham Lawing (Huntersville, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg) pitched two scoreless innings and Will Johnson (Faith, NC/E. Rowan HS) finished things off in the ninth.
Catawba capped the scoring in the eighth, scoring three times with two outs following a catcher's interference call. Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) singled home a run and Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) singled home two more.
Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) had three hits to lead a 13-hit attack by the Indians. Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) had two hits and scored three runs.
Hunter had two of the eight Wingate hits. The Bulldogs made five errors and allowed five unearned runs.
Catawba hosts 25th-ranked UNC Pembroke on Wednesday afternoon at 3 p.m.
