Baseball Gives Up Late Lead in Loss to UNC Pembroke
SALISBURY, NC -- Visiting UNC Pembroke scored six runs in the ninth to take a 12-8 win over Catawba in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Newman Park. The 25th-ranked Braves improve to 17-6, while the 14th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 18-6.
Catawba took an 8-6 lead into the final inning, but the Braves plated four runs before an out was recorded. UNCP took the lead on a bases-clearing triple by Ben Schmucker. Drew Alford tacked on a two-run double to cap the scoring.
Catawba had twice battled back from one-run deficits. Dylan Richardson (Randleman, NC/Randleman HS/Appalachian St.) singled home two in the fifth to give the Indians a 5-4 lead and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) drove in two with a two-out single in the seventh for a 7-6 edge.
UNC Pembroke had erased an early 3-0 deficit with four runs in the third. Schmucker capped that inning with a two-run single with two outs. UNCP also struck with two outs in the sixth on a two-run single by Chad Whitehead.
Schmucker led UNCP with five RBI on two hits. Alford collected three hits for the Braves. Dalton Knight had two hits and scored twice.
Catawba got four hits from Satterfield and three from Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech), who scored three runs. The Indians would leave 15 runners on base, 11 in scoring position.
Catawba remains at home, hosting Lenoir-Rhyne for a weekend series that begins on Friday night at 6 p.m.
