Terry Homers Twice, But Softball Suffers Sweep By Anderson
SALISBURY, NC -- Anderson swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from host Catawba on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field. The Trojans won by the scores of 3-1 and 11-2 to improve to 23-5 overall and 4-2 in the SAC. The Catawba Indians fall to 19-11 and 1-3.
Abby Child (LaGrange, GA) had the big blow in the opener for Anderson. She erased a 1-0 deficit with a three-run homer in the third. Lauren Bell (Woodstock, GA) was hit by a pitch to open the inning and Jessica Neidigh (Lawrenceville, GA) reached on a bunt single. After a strikeout, Child hit her home run on a 3-2 pitch.
Bell made those runs hold up as she improved to 13-2. She allowed just one run off three hits with two walks and eight strikeouts. After allowing the tying run to reach base in the seventh, Bell posted a strikeout and ground out to end the contest.
Catawba had opened the scoring, picking up a run in the first. Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) delivered a two-out single to plate Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS), who had walked to open the inning. Catawba had only one other baserunner, a single by Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) in the third, until the seventh.
Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) took the loss in the opener. She allowed just four hits and fanned 13. The freshman also lost game two and fell to 13-4 on the year.
Anderson jumped on Tysinger and Catawba with five runs in the first inning of game two. The first six batters reached for the Trojans with Jessica Swygert (Sharpsburg, GA) singling home two runs and Laura Jansky (Kennesaw, GA) doubling home two more for a 4-0 lead. Samantha Young (Canton, GA) singled home the final run of the frame.
The Trojans plated four more in the sixth. Jansky connected on a two-run homer and Young capped the frame with a run-scoring double. Both Catawba runs came on solo home runs from Terry. Michaela Boyd (Concord, NC/NW Cabarrus HS) also had two hits for the Lady Indians.
Bailey Smith (Shelby, NC) improved to 10-3 with the win for Anderson. She allowed the two runs off seven hits with four strikeouts. Jansky had five RBI to pace the Trojans.
Catawba gets back to league action on Tuesday, traveling to Brevard for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
