Women's Lacrosse Grabs 9-8 Win at Newberry
NEWBERRY, SC -- Catawba held host Newberry scoreless over the final 13 minutes and picked up a 9-8 win over the Wolves in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at Setzler Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 2-5, while the Wolves fall to 4-5.
Newberry scored to tie the game at 8-8 with 13:02 to play, but could not score again and Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida) delivered the game-winner with 8:20 remaining to give Catawba the win. The goal came on a free-position shot with the Lady Indians a player up.
Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) made 16 saves for Catawba, including three in a two minute span after Catawba had grabbed the 9-8 lead. She totaled seven of her total saves in the final eight minutes, including three off free-position shots, and also caused a turnover.
Catawba scored the opening three goals, coming in the first nine minutes and led 3-1 at the break. Newberry never led, but did tie the game twice, including at 8-8 on the third tally of the game by Noelle Allen.
Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John's Catholic HS) scored a team-high three goals for Catawba. Freshman Alyssa Corace (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac HS) had two goals and an assist in the win for the Lady Indians.
Catawba is back in action Monday as it travels to Guilford for a 4 p.m. game.
