12_BB_ZubillagaJulioDEF

SALISBURY, NC -- Lenoir-Rhyne and 14th-ranked Catawba split a South Atlantic Conference baseball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Newman Park.  The Bears hit five home runs in winning the opener 9-5, while the Catawba Indians took game two 11-1.  The Indians are now 20-7 overall and 10-5 in the SAC, while Lenoir-Rhyne stands at 10-19 and 5-10.

Ivan Vieitez and Colton Hansley hit back-to-back homers with two outs in the first to give Lenoir-Rhyne a lead in the opener it would never give up.  The Bears added two runs in the second then three more in third on Hansley's second long ball and a two-run homer from Mike Gasque.

Catawba tried to rally.  Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) hit the first of his two home runs in the Indian third to cut the margin to 7-3.  A RBI-single from Brett Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) cut the L-R lead to 8-5 after seven.

The Indians got the tying run to the plate with two outs in the ninth, but Vieitez got a ground out to end it.  Clay Tresher improved to 2-1 with the win.  He went six innings and allowed five runs, four earned, off eight hits with four strikeouts.

Catawba scored a pair of runs in the second inning of the nightcap, getting a run on an error and a double from Jon Wallace (Salisbury, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg).  Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS) singled home two runs in the third to extend Catawba's lead to 4-0.

Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) keyed a five-run Catawba fifth with a two-run homer as the Indians stretched the lead to 10-1.  Furr capped the scoring with a solo homer in the sixth.

Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) improved to 5-0 with the win for the Indians.  He tossed six innings and allowed an unearned off four hits while fanning five.  Furr had three hits and drove in three.  Dalton Hall had two of the four Lenoir-Rhyne hits.

Catawba continues a busy home stand by hosting Kutztown on Monday at 3 p.m.
