Lomascolo Sets Strikeout Mark as Baseball Opens C-N Series With Win

JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Senior Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) broke a school record for the second straight start and Catawba opened a weekend series at Carson-Newman with an 8-0 victory in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex. The 18th-ranked Catawba Indians improve to 23-8 overall and 11-5 in the SAC, while the Eagles fall to 13-16 and 9-7.
Lomascolo improved to 7-1 as he limited Carson-Newman to just three hits over eight innings. He walked two and fanned 13 to move past Jerry Maye for the all-time mark in career strikeouts. Lomascolo now has 326 after surpassing Maye's mark of 318.
Catawba got all the runs Lomascolo would need with three unearned runs in the third. Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) started the inning as he struck out and reached on an error. With two outs, Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS), Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) and Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) each delivered RBI singles.
Those third inning runs would be all the scoring until the eighth when Dula connected on a two-run homer and Beard plated a run on a ground out. The Indians tacked on two more in the ninth on pinch-hit, two-run single by Zach Smith (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS/Pitt CC).
Dula paced Catawba with his three RBI on two hits. Satterfield, Kronenfeld and Cameron Cockman (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS/UNC Wilmington) each chipped in with a pair of hits. Kevin Fanchett had two hits for Carson-Newman.
The two teams are scheduled to complete the series on Saturday with a noon doubleheader.
