Baseball Rolls to Series Sweep at Carson-Newman
JEFFERSON CITY, TN -- Catawba pounded out 31 hits in a doubleheader sweep of host Carson-Newman in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Saturday afternoon at the Silver Diamond Complex. The 18th-ranked Catawba Indians won by the scores of 12-5 and 13-6 to improve to 25-8 overall and 13-5 in the SAC. The Eagles fall to 13-18 and 9-9.
Catawba scored in each of the first four innings of the opener to take a 9-0 lead. Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) pitched seven solid innings to improve to 6-0. He allowed four runs on nine hits with six strikeouts.
Cameron Cockman (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS/UNC Wilmington) led the 16-hit attack with three base hits and three RBI. Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) also had three hits, while Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS), Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) and Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) each drove in two runs.
Evan Jurjevic had three hits for Carson-Newman, including a two-run homer. Zach Long, Kevin Franchett and Trace Rogers each had two hits. Alex Britt took the loss to fall to 3-3. He gave up nine runs, six earned, off nine hits in three and a third innings.
Carson-Newman led 1-0 in game two, before Catawba erupted for four runs in the third, five in the fourth and three in fifth. After the Eagles scored an unearned run in the second off John Tuttle (Kannapolis, NC/Brown HS), Catawba picked up four run with two out in the third. Dula capped the inning with a two-run homer, his 12th of the season.
The Eagles came right back getting a run on a wild pitch and another on an error, but Tuttle worked out of the jam, leaving the bases loaded. Catawba got those runs right back with the big five-run frame. The Indians capitalized on two C-N errors with Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) connecting on a two-run homer.
Hawks added a second two-run shot in the fifth and finished the game with three hits and five RBI. Dula, Zubillaga, Cockman and Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) all had two hits and the Indians rapped out 15 more hits in the win.
Tuttle got the win as he went four innings, giving up four runs, two earned, off seven hits with seven strikeouts. Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) earned his fifth save by tossing the final three frames. He allowed two runs, one earned, off three hits and fanning three.
Long had three hits and two RBI for Carson-Newman. Rogers, Cody Fox and Brandon Roberts each had two hits. Dustin Dunagan took the loss, allowing four runs over three innings.
Catawba is back on the road Tuesday as they travel to Belmont Abbey for a 2:30 p.m. contest.
