Locklear scores 22 to pace Women's Basketball to win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College defeated West Virginia State 77-68 in the opening day’s action of the New Year’s Shootout on Friday night at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians win their fourth stright and improve to 7-3 overall. WVSC falls to 3-6. Catawba was able to claim its win over WV State despite committing 24 turnovers and getting outrebounded 50-37. The Lady Indians hits on 43% of its shots, holding WV State to 33% and helped foce 35 Lady Yellow Jacket miscues. Catawba used a 15-3 in the middle ten minutes of the opening half to open up a 25-12 lead. After falling down 29-14, WVSC used a 13-5 run to close the half and trailed 34-27 at the break. Catawba built back a 49-34 lead in the opening seven minutes of the second half and the Lady Yellow Jackets trailed by double digits the rest of the way. Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) scored 22 points to pace Catawba, including going 10-of-13 from the charity stripe, and added five steals and two blocks. Lynn Morancie (Houston, TX) had 12 points and Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) had 10 points and five steals. Doye Byrd (South Bend, IN) had 14 points to lead WV State, while LaRhonda Garrett (Baltimore, MD) had 11 points and seven rebounds. #####
