Softball Picks Up Split With Lenoir-Rhyne
HICKORY, NC -- Catawba split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader at Lenoir-Rhyne on Tuesday afternoon at Bears Field. Lenoir-Rhyne won the opener 2-0, while the Catawba Indians battled back for a 4-1 win in game two. The Lady Indians now stand at 23-13 overall and 4-4 in the SAC. The Bears are 23-8 and 7-3.
The Lady Indians scored single runs in the first and second innings of the night cap to grab a lead they would not give up. Catawba took advantage of an L-R error in each frame to score. Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) doubled home the opening run and Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian HS/N. Greenville) doubled home the second-inning run.
The Bears threatened in the fourth, loading the bases against starter Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS). Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) gave up a RBI single to Megan Laxton, but Catawba erased two runners on the bases on the play to help get out of a major jam. Tysinger got a strikeout to end the inning, fanned the side in the fifth and sat down L-R in order in the sixth. The Bears managed a two-out walk in the seventh, but Tysinger posted another strikeout to end it.
Another Lenoir-Rhyne error led to a pair of Catawba runs in the fifth that gave the Lady Indians their 4-1 edge. E.D. Huneycutt and Tysinger each had two hits and RBI for Catawba in game two. Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) scored a pair of runs. Tysinger got the win, allowing no runs on one hit with seven strikeouts.
Lenoir-Rhyne scored the only runs of the opener on a two-out, two-run homer by Jessica Fellmeth in the first inning. Haily Jarman had singled prior to the home run. The Lady Indians had runners at the corners in both the third and fourth innings, but failed to score.
Catawba had one last chance in the seventh after getting runners to second and third with one out. Brandi Hand was able to get a pair of groundouts to end it. Hole pitched the shutout, allowing five hits and striking out four. Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) had two of the Catawba hits.
Catawba hosts Tusculum in another league doubleheader on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m.
