Baseball Loses Late Lead at Barton
WILSON, NC -- Barton scored six runs in the bottom of the eight to grab an 8-3 win over 19th-ranked Catawba in baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Nixon Field. The Bulldogs improve to 13-14, while the Catawba Indians fall to 25-10.
Catawba had taken a 3-2 lead in the top half of the eight on a pinch-hit RBI single by Zach Smith (Salisbury, NC/E. Rowan HS/Pitt CC) with two outs. The Bulldogs came right back. After an out to open the innings, three straight single pulled Barton even with Avery Harper knocking in the tying. JT Bunce's bunt put the Bulldogs on top.
Each team had scored a run in the first, Catawba getting a RBI single from Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech). A sacrifice fly gave the Indians a 2-1 lead in the second. Barton pulled even in the fourth on a two-out single by Nathan Boykin.
Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) had two hits for Catawba. Phillip Williams collected four hits in the win for Barton. Clay Martin drove in a pair of runs.
Catawba returns to league action on Friday, hosting Tusculum at 6:00 p.m.
