Little and Locklear power Women's Basketball to Shootout title

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College claimed the unofficial championship of the New Year’s Shootout with a 71-64 win over Winston-Salem State in women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The host Lady Indians overcame an 11-point second half deficit to win their fifth in a row and improve to 8-3 on the year, while WSSU fell to 5-6. Winston-Salem State opened a seven-point late in the first half, but saw Catawba tie the score on four times in the closing minutes and the Lady Rams would lead 37-35 at the break. Leading 53-51, WSSU went on a 9-0 run to grab a 62-51 margin with 9:01 to play, but the Lady Rams would only get two free throws the reminder of the game as Catawba rallied. After falling behind by 11, Catawba scored 14 consecutive points to grab a 65-62 lead with 3:57 left. Phinnie Matthews (Chicago, IL) would hit two free throws to bring WSSU to within 65-64 at the 3:34 mark, then saw Catawba score the game’s final six points. Over the last nine minutes, the Lady Rams were 0-13 from the field, 2-5 at the line and committed three turnovers. Shootout MVP, Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC), and all-tournament performer, Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC), paced Catawba accounting for 42 points and 25 rebounds. Little had 18 points and 13 rebounds, while Locklear added a game-high 24 points and 12 boards. Lashonda Horton (Greenville, NC) had 15 points and 11 rebounds for WSSU, while Matthews added 15 points. Lori Shelby (Joliet, IL) represented the Lady Rams on the All-Shootout team. #####
