Tysinger Sets Strikeout Record as Softball Splits With Tusculum

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba battled league-leading Tusculum to a split in a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.  The visiting Pioneers won the opener 2-1, while the Catawba Indians grabbed game two 6-1.  The Lady Indians are now 24-14 overall and 5-5 in the SAC, while Tusculum is 21-14 and 9-3.

Catawba rallied from a 1-0 deficit to win game two.  The Pioneers went on top in the third as Kaytlin Stroinski ((Howell, MI) led off the frame with a solo home run.  Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) entered later in the inning to keep the Pioneers from adding to their lead.

The Lady Indians went to the fourth inning without a hit, by Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) looped a single to center with one-out.  Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) hit the next pitch out to left center for a two-run homer to put Catawba on top.  The Lady Indians went on six straight hits with one out and Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian HS/N. Greenville) added a two-run single in the frame.

Tysinger shut down Tusculum the rest of the way, allowing just one hit and a walk over the final four innings with seven strikeouts.  She got the win in relief to improve to 18-6 and also set a new school record for strikeouts in a season with 238.

Tusculum broke a scoreless tie in the opener with a run off a wild pitch in the fifth.  Alix Kruel (Horicon, WI) and Carolyn Williamson (Knoxville, TN) had singled with two outs to load the bases and Katie Brennan (Manassas, VA), who had singled with one out, scored the opening run.  The Pioneers benefited from a two-out Catawba error to add another run in the sixth as Brennan picked up a RBI single.

The Lady Indians got a run back in the bottom of the sixth on a single by Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS), but a baserunner erased at third.  Tysinger flied out to end the inning with a runner at second.  Elizabeth Johnson (Lawrenceville, WI) sat down Catawba in order in the seventh to improve to 9-8.

Catawba travels to Brevard on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader, rescheduled from an earlier rainout.
