Tysinger Sets Shutout Mark as Softball Sweeps Brevard

BREVARD, NC -- Catawba took both ends of a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon at the Brevard Softball Field.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 2-0 and 9-0 to improve to 26-14 overall and 7-5 in the SAC.  The Tornados fall to 13-25 and 3-9.

Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) pitched both doubleheaders for the Lady Indians to etch her name to another record.  Her nine shutouts this season have surpassed the mark set by teammate Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS), who had eight shutouts two years ago as a freshman

Tysinger allowed just three hits in the two games combined.  The freshman took a no-hitter into the final inning of the opener before Brittany Fowler singled with one out.  The only other baserunner for the Tornados came in the third inning when Heather Morris reached on an error.

Catawba scored both of its run of the opener in the third inning.  Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS) reached on an error and scored on a single by Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS).  Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) singled home Kovalcin.

The Lady Indians wrapped up game two behind a six-run fifth.  Catawba already led 3-0 entering the fifth as Terry scored on a wild pitch and Sydney Hyder (Asheboro, NC/SW Randolph HS) had a sacrifice fly.  Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NY/Madison HS) scored on a wild pitch in the fourth.

Kelsey Burgess (Charlotte, NC/Gaston Christian HS/N. Greenville), who had two hits in the opener, started the big inning with a two-out RBI double.  She would later score on a wild pitch, as did Gerone.  Terry delivered a three-run double to cap the scoring.  Catawba got hits from seven of the nine spots in the lineup.

Tysinger, now 20-6, allowed two hits in the nightcap, a double in the first and a single in the third.  She struck out four in game two after fanning six in the opener.  Kayla Clemens surrendered just two runs, one earned, off five hits with 10 strikeouts in losing game one for Brevard.  Clemens had double in game two.

Catawba travels to Mars Hill on Saturday for a 1 p.m. doubleheader with the SAC co-leading Lions.
