Baseball Fails to Hold Leads in Doubleheader Loss to #2 Mount Olive
MOUNT OLIVE, NC -- The second-ranked Mount Olive Trojans rallied twice to swept a doubleheader from visiting Catawba in baseball action on Tuesday at Scarborough Field. Mount Olive improves to 33-4, while the 30th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 27-13.
Mount Olive scored a run in each of the final four innings to rally for the opening win. Matt Petrone led off the seventh with a single, stole second and scored the winning run on Braden Reitano's single. Daniel Oliver led off the sixth with solo home run to tie the score at 3-3.
Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) gave Catawba a lead in the first with a sacrifice fly after Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) led off with a single and Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) doubled. A solo home run by Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS), his 13th of the year, in the third made it 2-0.
Geno Escalante put the Trojans on the scoreboard with a solo home run to lead off the fourth, but Catawba answered right back as Hawks scored on an error following a Satterfield single in the fifth. Jermaine Berry singled home a run for Mount Olive in its fifth to cut the margin to 3-2.
Satterfield had two of Catawba's seven hits. Chris Orphanos picked up the win to improve to 7-0 as he shutout Catawba on one hit over the final two and two-third innings. Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) allowed two runs off four hits with five strikeouts in five innings of work for Catawba. Graham Lawing (Huntersville, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Wilkes CC) took the loss, allowing a pair of runs on three hits in relief.
Catawba built a 6-2 lead in the nightcap before the Trojans erased the deficit with a five-run fourth. Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS), Julio Zubillaga (China Grove, NC/Carson HS) and Cameron Beard (Conover, NC/Bunker Hill HS) each had two-out RBI single in the first for the Indians for a quick 3-0 lead.
A two-run homer by Reitano cut the Catawba lead to 3-2 after an inning, but Kronenfeld smashed a two-out, three-run homer in the second to push the Indian lead to 6-2. Zak Orrison doubled home the first two runs of the fourth for Mount Olive. Berry singled home a run with two outs and Tyler Farmer brought home the final two runs on his single to put the Trojans up 7-6. Escalante homered in the sixth for the final margin.
Catawba returns home this weekend to host Lincoln Memorial in a conference series which begins on Friday night at 6 p.m.
