Jones Nets Six Goals as Women's Lacrosse Tops Young Harris
YOUNG HARRIS, GA -- Catawba got six goals from Meredith Jones (Barnesville, MD/St. John's Catholic HS) in a 17-10 win over host Young Harris in women’s lacrosse action on Saturday afternoon at the YHC Lacrosse Field. The Catawba Indians improve to 5-9, while the Mountain Lions fall to 1-15.
Jones' six goals gives her 34 on the season which sets a new season high for Catawba. It betters the total of 31 set last season by Ebony Mills (Harrison, ME/Oxford Hills HS/Mount Ida). Mills followed Jones with five goals in Saturday's win.
The teams swapped goals over the first 15 minutes then Jones and Mills scored back to back in a span of 29 seconds to give the Lady Indians a 6-4 lead at the 13:18 mark of the opening half. Catawba pulled away at the end of the half and the opening 10 minutes of the second half.
Jones scored with just nine second to go before the break to make it 8-5 then tallied two to start the second half for a 10-5 edge. Mills capped a 9-1 spurt with consecutive goals to push the Catawba lead to 13-5 with 20 minutes remaining. Young Harris closed within six goals on several occasions, but that was as close as they would get.
Chelsey Bauer (Tampa, FL/Plant HS) picked up two goals and two assists for the Lady Indians. Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS) made 13 saves in goal for Catawba.
Taylor Lincoln scored five goals for Young Harris with Jaclyn Kernohan adding three more. Carter Moore stopped nine shots in goal for the Mountain Lions.
Catawba puts a wrap on its second season next Saturday, hosting Erskine in the season finale at 1 p.m.
