MARS HILL, NC -- Catawba swept a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader from co-leading Mars Hill on Saturday afternoon at Ponder Park.  The Catawba Indians won by the scores of 2-0 and 7-3 to improve to 28-14 overall and 9-5 in the SAC.  The Lions fall to 20-9 and 9-5.

Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) threw her third straight shutout in the opener for Catawba.  It marked her 10th on the season as she scattered four hits, walked two and struck out nine.

The Lady Indians got the only run Tysinger would need in the top of the third.  Holli Chandler (New London, NC/N. Stanly HS) led off with a single and was bunted to second.  She moved to third on a single by Kimberly Fesperman (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS) and scored on a double by Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior HS).

In game two, Catawba got on the board with a two-out single by Emily D. Huneycutt in the top of the first.  Mars Hill came right back, scoring twice off Lady Indian starter Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS), but Tysinger came in and worked out of bases loaded, one-out jam to keep the score 2-1.

The Lady Indians pulled even on a RBI single by Fesperman in the forth, but once again Mars Hill answered this time on a run-scoring double by Robyn Stanek for a 3-2 lead.  In the fifth, Terry led off with a double and scored on a single by Tara Gibbs (Waynesville, NC/Tuscola HS) to tie the game once again.

Chandler put Catawba ahead with a solo home run in the sixth then Gibbs gave the Lady Indians some insurance runs with a three-run homer in the seventh.  Tysinger kept Catawba in front, earning her second win of the day to improve to 22-6.  She allowed a run off five hits over six and two-thirds innings.  She walked six and fanned six.

Terry had three hits and scored three runs for Catawba.  Gibbs collected four RBI.  Stanek had a pair of RBI doubles for Mars Hill  Stephanie McGrath also had two hits for the Lions.

Catawba, now just a game out of first place in the SAC, travels to Wingate on Wednesday for a 2 p.m. doubleheader.
