Baseball Blitzed by USC AIken

SALISBURY, NC -- Nationally ninth ranked USC Aiken rapped out 20 hits in cruising over Catawba 15-3 in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday evening at Newman Park.  The Pacers improve to 31-8, while the 28th-ranked Catawba Indians fall to 30-14.

Aiken led 1-0 before breaking the game open with a five-run third inning.  Catawba committed three errors in the process, leaving three of the five runs unearned.

A Sean Miller (Crofton, MD) homerun capped a three-run fifth for the Pacers before Catawba would respond in the bottom half of the inning.  Aiken pitcher Zach Hayden (Martinez, GA) would walk the first three batters before being relieved by Danny Wissmann (Arbutus, GA).  Wissmann would only give up an Ethan Satterfield (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) sacrifice fly before stranding three.

In the top of the seventh Miller would line a two-run triple to right-center to increase the Pacers lead to 11-1.  Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) would add two for the Indians in the bottom half of the inning with a double to score Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) and Danny Parisi (Shirley, NY/Longwood HS).

The Pacers would add four insurance runs in the eighth lead by a three-run double by Ryan Metzler (Glen Bernie, MD).  Miller would later bring in Metzler with an RBI single for his seventh RBI of the night.

Catawba starter Sean Grant (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) would take the loss after going just two innings and giving up the run in the second.   Grant falls to 0-2 on the season. Graham Lawing (Huntersville, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg) would give up five runs in just two thirds of an inning after Catawba committed all three of its errors.  The Indians used eight pitchers on the night giving up a combined 15 runs on 20 hits.

Kronenfeld and Hawks each recorded two hits on the night for Catawba with Kronenfeld plating two in the process with the double in the seventh.  The Aiken offense was paced by Miller and Tyler Moore, each going 4-for-4 on the night.  Miller tallied seven RBIs while Moore would bring in two of his own.  Ryan Metzler added three hits.

Catawba returns to action on Friday at 3 p.m. to face conference opponent Mars Hill for the final weekend series of the season.  The series will be held at Mars Hill’s Henderson Field.
