Football rolls to 31-3 win over Newberry

SALISBURY, NC -- Red-shirt freshman Luke Samples (Elkin, NC) threw four touchdown passes to lead Catawba College, ranked sixth in the AFCA Coaches Poll, past visiting Newberry 31-3 in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium.  The win by Catawba was its 21st straight regular-season victory and improved the Indians to 5-0 overall and 3-0 in the SAC.  Newberry falls to 3-2 and 0-2.  Catawba also recorded its 15th straight league win.   Catawba took the opening kickoff and drove 70 yards in 11 plays to grab a 7-0 lead.  Samples found Nick Means (Thomasville, NC) for the score from 11 yards out.  That would be the only score of the opening quarter, but Catawba began to pull away late in the first half.

Samples and Means would deliver again with six minutes left in the half, this time from four yards out, to push the lead to 14-0.  Catawba drove to the Newberry four on its next possession, but failed to convert on a field goal try with 55 seconds remaining.  Newberry would give the ball right back to Catawba, fumbling on its second play, and Catawba took over on the seven with 17 seconds left.  On third down, Samples threw a fade in the end zone to Arnold Gaither (Turnersburg, NC) for a score and a 21-0 lead at the break.

Catawba added a pair of scores in the third quarter.  Matt Gross (Hendersonville, NC) kicked a 44-yard field goal and Samples threw a 62-yard strike to Gaither at the 5:24 mark for a 31-0 lead.  Newberry's lone score came at the start of the fourth quarter on B.J. Griffin's (Lancaster, SC) 27-yard field goal.

Samples completed 15-of-20 passes for 268 yards, making just his second start.  Freshman Rodney Wallace (Bamberg, SC) rushed for 61 yards, with 57 coming in the opening half.  Catawba totaled 415 yards and held Newberry to 205 and just 93 on the ground to a team averaging over 230 yards per game.  Chad Tackett (Swansea, SC) led Newberry on the ground with 53 yards, while red-shirt freshman quarterback Brian Shealy (Leesville, SC) threw for 114 yards, completing 12-of-25 passes.
