Lomascolo Strikes Out 15 as Baseball Wins Opener at Mars Hill

MARS HILL, NC -- Senior Nick Lomascolo struck out a career-high 15 batters as Catawba topped host Mars Hill 5-1 in South Atlantic Conference baseball action on Friday afternoon at Henderson Field.  The Catawba Indians, ranked 28th in NCAA II, improve to 31-14 overall and 19-6 in the SAC.  The Lions fall to 10-29 and 7-16.

Lomascolo's total was the fifth-best game performance by an Indian hurler.  Only four players have fanned more, including Jerry Maye, who set the school record of 18 in a game back on March 15, 1965.  Lomascolo went seven innings to improve to 9-2 on the year.  He allowed one run off four hits and walked two.

Catawba snapped a 1-1 tie with a pair of runs in both the fourth and fifth innings.  John Wallace (Salisbury, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Lynchburg) singled home a run in each frame.  It was his RBI single in the fourth that put the Tribe up for good.

Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) had three hits for Catawba, including a RBI single in the fourth to push the lead to 3-1.  Craig Brooks (Monroe, NC/Parkwood HS) drove in a pair of runs for the Indians on sacrifice flies in the fifth and ninth innings.

Catawba loaded the bases in the first inning with no outs, but a 1-2-3 double play got the Lions out of trouble.  The Indians loaded the bases again in the second with one out and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS).  Mars Hill pulled even on a two-out single in the third by Evan Rogers.

The Lions threatened in the fifth, but Lomascolo worked around a hit and two walks to keep Mars Hill off the scoreboard.  Phillip Carroll trimmed the Mars Hill deficit to 5-2 on a single in the eight, but Brooks added that run back in the ninth for the Indians.  Graham Lawing (Huntersville, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Wilkes CC) and Ryan McClintock (Matthews, NC/Providence HS) each worked an inning of relief to close the game out.

The teams will finish up the three-game series with a Saturday doubleheader that starts at noon.
