SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba and Newberry split a South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader on Saturday afternoon at Whitley Field.  Newberry claimed the opener 2-1, while Catawba won 12-5 in game two.  The Catawba Indians now stand at 29-17 overall and 10-8 in the SAC.  The Wolves fall to 16-24 and 4-14.

Catawba erupted for seven runs in the first inning to grab the early edge in game two.  Gina Gerone (Brooklyn, NC/Madison HS) capped the inning with a grand slam.  A home run by Emily D. Huneycutt (Oakboro, NC/W. Stanly HS) helped extend the lead to 9-1 after two.

Newberry got back in the game in the third as the Wolves used a Catawba error to plate four runs.  Gwenell Crawford singled home a pair of runs in the frame.  That would be all for the Wolves as Emily B. Huneycutt (Locust, NC/W. Stanly HS) kept the visitors off the board the rest of the way.

Emily B. Huneycutt improved to 3-6 as she threw the complete game.  She allowed five runs, two earned, off eight hits.  Emily D. Huneycutt had three hits and drove in a pair of runs.  Kimberly Fesperman (Kannapolis, NC/S. Rowan HS) also collected three hits and scored twice.  Mollie Kovalcin (Latrobe, PA/Greater Latrobe HS) drove in two on two hits.

Newberry broke a 1-1 tied with an unearned run in the top of the sixth to win the opener.  Amelia Putnam drove in the run with a two-out single.  Each team had scored in the first.  The Wolves on a two-out single by Paige Brugh and Catawba when Amanda Terry (Cordova, NC/Richmond Senior) came home on a wild pitch.

Kaylyn Camacho picked up the win.  She allowed one run off seven hits with five strikeouts.  Carley Tysinger (Lexington, NC/C. Davidson HS) took the loss, allowing just one earned run on five hits with 10 strikeouts.

Gabby Bedard had two hits for Newberry in the opener and added three more in the nightcap.  Kovalcin collected a pair of hits for Catawba in game one.

Catawba will return to action on Thursday as the Lady Indians host the Food Lion SAC Tournament at Whitley Field.  Catawba opens play against Carson-Newman at 9 a.m. on Thursday morning.
