Locklear's gets career-high as Women's Basketball rolls over Queens

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Catawba College blew open a tight game over the final 10 minutes and defeated host Queens 88-59 in women’s basketball action at Ovens Athletic Center on Monday night. The win marked the seventh straight for the Lady Indians, who improve to 10-3 overall. Queens falls to 4-6. Both teams struggled to score in the opening moments as Catawba managed an 8-6 edge through the opening six minutes. The Lady Indian reserves played much of the opening 10 minutes and led 11-8 before a 14-2 run by Queens put the Royals up 22-13 with 9:54 to go in the half. Catawba would respond with a 13-4 run to tie the score at 26-26 on a pair of free throws by Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC). Catawba would lead 39-31 at the break. Queens would open the second half on a 16-4 run to grab a 47-43 advantage with 14:27 left. The Lady Indians got a layup by Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) and a three-point play by Little to regain the lead at 48-47 at the 13:21 mark. Catawba led only 52-49 heading into the final 10 minutes, but would clamp down on Queens and held the Royals to a single bucket over a seven and half minute span to break out to a 72-51 lead. Three-pointer by Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) and Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) ignited the 20-2 run that put the game away. Queens scored only 10 points over the final 11:49 of the game and six of those came on a pair of three pointers in the final minute. Locklear led the Lady Indians with a career-high 26 points and added eight rebounds. She hit on 9-of-11 shots and was 8-of-13 at the line. Cox added 20 points, while Darden had 16 and Little 13. Leslie Olson led Queens with 14 points. The Royals were forced into 32 turnovers and shot 42% compared to 50% for Catawba. #####
