Baseball Bounced From SAC Tourney With Loss to Newberry

FOREST CITY, NC -- Newberry scored twice in the bottom of the eighth to claim a 3-2 win over top-seeded Catawba in an elimination game at the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Baseball Tournament on Saturday night at McNair Field.  The Wolves, seeded-fourth, improve to 29-21 and advance to another elimination game on Sunday.  The Catawba Indians fall to 35-16.

Catawba wasted an outstanding pitching performance from Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS), who no-hit Newberry until there were two outs in the sixth inning.  Whitley left the game in the eighth after hitting the initial batter of the inning.

After Whitley left, Albert Baur tied the game with a double and a safety squeeze bunt by Andy Vogel brought home the winning run.  Tyler Sturkie retired the Indians in order in the ninth to post his eighth save.

Newberry looked to go on top early, loading the bases in the first before Whitley got a pair of strikeouts to end the inning.  The game was scoreless until the bottom of the fifth when JoJo Bradley, who walked to start the inning, scored on a two-out error.

Catawba threatened in the sixth as Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) tripled with one out, but the Indians could not get him home.  Catawba managed to go on top in the eighth as Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) singled, stole second and went to third on a passed ball.  He scored on a wild pitch.  Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) later scored on an error to give Catawba a short-lived 2-1 lead.

Alex Roberts started for Newberry, but did not factor in the decision.  He allowed no runs off three hits with nine strikeouts in seven innings.  Matt Chapman got the win in relief to improve to 4-1.  Bradley had the only multi-hit game for either team with a pair of singles.

Whitley surrendered just two hits in his seven-plus innings.  He allowed two runs, one earned, while walking three, hitting one and fanning six.  Sean Grant (Statesville, NC/W. Iredell HS) took the loss as he fell to 0-3.

Catawba will host Barton on Tuesday at 6 p.m. in most likely its final game of the season.
