Baseball Seniors Bid Adieu to Newman Park With Rout Of Barton

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba's bats erupted to cap its 2013 home baseball season, leading to a 17-3 thumping of visiting Barton on Tuesday night at Newman Park.  The Catawba Indians improve to 36-16 and will need lots of help if it is to gain an at-large berth into the NCAA II Southeast Regional.  The Bulldogs finish their season at 19-24.

Senior Cameron Cockman (Pleasant Garden, NC/SE Guilford HS/UNC Wilmington) collected five of Catawba's 19 hits, going 5-for-6 with three runs scores.  It was one shy of the school record for hits in a game.  The other senior field player, Garrett Furr (Gold Hill, NC/Mt. Pleasant HS), had a pair of hits and three RBI.

Blake Houston (Mt. Ulla, NC/S. Rowan HS) rapped out three hits with a pair of doubles, five RBI and three runs scored.  Paul Kronenfeld (Greensboro, NC/Woodberry Forest HS/Georgia Tech) also had five RBI, including a three-run homer, while Keaton Hawks (Lexington, NC/E. Davidson HS) scored four runs.

Senior Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) won his final start in Newman Park to improve to 10-3.  He tossed five and a third innings of shutout ball, allowing just one hit and fanning eight.  Senior hurlers Ross Whitley (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS), Austin Moyer (Greensboro, NC/SE Guilford HS/USC Upstate) and Graham Lawing (Huntersville, NC/NW Cabarrus HS/Wilkes CC) also pitched in the win.

Ben Williams had one of Barton's four hits and drove in a pair of runs.  Nathan Boykin drove in the other run with a pinch hit single.  Chris Davis singled and scored a run.

Catawba jumped out quickly on back-to-back doubles by Hawks and Houston for a 1-0 lead.  Furr knocked in Houston to make it 2-0 after an inning.  Houston and Kronenfeld each had two-run singles in the second to push the margin to 6-0.  Kronenfeld made it 9-0 with a three-run homer in the fourth.

The Indians left no doubt in the outcome as they put up a five-spot in the fifth.  Houston and Furr both doubled in a pair of runs.  Catawba eventually led 17-0 before Barton got on the board with three runs in the eighth.

The initial NCAA regional ranking will be released on Wednesday, but the field will not be selected for several weeks as other conference finish up their seasons.
