Darden's 18 paces Women's Basketball to ninth straight win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College placed five players in double figures in winning its ninth straight with a 76-63 victory over visiting Mars Hill in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action at Goodman Gym on Saturday afternoon. The win improved the Lady Indians to 12-3 overall and 3-0 in the SAC, while Mars Hill fell to 8-8 and 0-3. Sophomore Isiaette Darden (Wilson, NC) led Catawba with 18 points off the bench and added five rebounds. The Lady Indians never trailed and held Mars Hill scoreless for a four and a half minute span midway through the opening half to gain a 24-14 edge. The Lady Lions shot just 37% and had 14 turnovers in the opening half as Catawba would take a 38-29 lead to the break. Two quick baskets by the Lady Lions in the second half trimmed the margin to 38-33, but Catawba responded with a 14-1 run over the five minutes to grab a 52-34 advantage with 13:38 remaining. Mars Hill would fight back to pull within 55-50 on a three-pointer by Holly Carringer (Murphy, NC) at the 8:07 mark, but the Lady Indians responded by connected for their only three-pointers as Darden and Ashley Cox (Richmond, VA) hit back-to-back triples to give Catawba a 61-52 edge with 6:36 to play. Catawba went on to build its lead back to 13 in the final minutes. Cox followed Darden with 12 points and added four steals, while Christina Carmon (Stafford, VA), Dorthell Little (Rockingham, NC) and Lynn Morancie (Houston, TX) all had 11. Tiffany Atkins (Barnardsville, NC) scored 17 to pace the Lady Lions, while Kristi Ferris (Knoxville, TN) tallied 13. #####
