Scheich Sets Points Record in Men's Lacrosse Loss at Limestone
GAFFNEY, NC -- Catawba junior John Scheich (Waxhaw, NC/Weddington HS) set a new school record for points in a season, but the Indians fell to host and NCAA II third-ranked Limestone 13-6 on Saturday afternoon at Saints Field. The Saints improve to 15-1, while the Catawba Indians fall to 9-7.
Scheich scored three goals to lead Catawba and push his point total to 73 on the season, eclipsing the mark of 71 set by Jason Windett in 2004. His three goals push his season total to 50, the most in Division II. Tom Cullop (New Windsor, MD/S. Carroll HS) added a pair of goals, while Trevor Sieracki (Austin, TX/Anderson HS) collected a pair of assists.
Todd Nakasuji and Vinni Ricci each scored three goals to pace Limestone. Riley Loewen had two goals and three assists with Reid Reinholdt posting three assists in the win. Catawba out-shot the Saints 43-35, but Christian Dzwilewski stopped 15 shots in goal for Limestone over three and a half quarters.
Cullop gave Catawba a lead with a goal six minutes into the game. He later tied the score at 2-2, but Limestone fired in four straight to go up 6-2 midway through the second quarter. Scheich scored back-to-back to close the game to 6-4 before Loewen put Limestone up 7-4 at the break.
Scheich brought Catawba within 8-5 at the 4:03 mark of the third quarter, but Loewen answered 45 seconds later and Limestone began to pull away. The Saints scored five straight goals to push their advantage to 13-5 with just under seven minutes to play.
Catawba will close out its season at home next Saturday, hosting Belmont Abbey at 7 p.m.
