Swimming falls to Wingate in home finale

SALISBURY, NC – Wingate University defeated host Catawba 117-74 in women’s swimming action on Wednesday night at Johnson Pool. Catawba took first place in five of the 11 events, but the depth of the Bulldogs helped Wingate pull away. Catawba won the opening event, the 400 medley relay, edging the Bulldogs by just over two seconds. Wingate’s Kristyn Hoffman (Cary, NC) followed with a win in the 1000 freestyle, while Christy Cousins (Woodbridge, VA) took the 200 free event. The Lady Indians would win the next three events to pull within 53-49. Erin Hyde (Lilburn, GA) won the 50 free by nipping Stephanie Reinshuttle (Palm Harbor, FL) of Wingate by six one-hundredths of a second. Erin Ryan (Akron, OH) took the next two events, winning the 200 IM and the 200 butterfly. After a win by Reinshuttle in the 100 free, Hyde would claim her second individual win of the night in the 200 backstroke. Beth Voetsch (Philadelphia, NY) took the 500 free for Wingate, while Cousins won her second event, the 200 breaststroke. Wingate claimed the 400 freestyle relay to close out the meet.
