No. 19: LJ McCray sets career record with his third kickoff return for a touchdown in win over Brevard.
In a game on Nov. 3, LJ McCray answered Brevard’s first score with an 84-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to put Catawba back on top 13-6. It marked the third of his career to set a new school record and helped the Indians to a 19-13 win.
SALISBURY, NC -- Host Catawba held Brevard on downs in the red zone in the closing minute to preserve a 19-13 win in South Atlantic Conference football action on Saturday afternoon at Shuford Stadium and Kirkland Field. The Catawba Indians snap a five-game losing streak to improve to 4-6 overall and 2-4 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 1-9 and 0-5.
Starting at its own two-yard-line with 2:18 left, Brevard drove inside the Catawba 10-yard-line in the final 30 seconds. Aaron Reese (Bradenton, FL) converted passes of 28 and 21 yards to Eric Watts (Powhatan, VA) to move the Tornados from the Brevard 37 to the Catawba 14 and a personal foul put the ball on the Tribe seven. Damein Lee (Reidsville, NC/Reidsville HS) sacked Reese for a seven-yard loss on first down and Jason Taylor (Bahama, NC/Northern HS) added another sack on third down to move the ball back to the 16. Reese's fourth-down pass sailed long on the final play.
The final stand marked the third time on the day that Catawba denied Brevard in the red zone. Brevard had fumbled away a scoring chance late in the first quarter while trailing 13-6 and were denied on downs during its next possession. The Tornados held a 375-265 edge in yardage, but were hurt by three turnovers.
Half of Catawba's yards came from freshman tailback Xavier Bond (Smiths Station, AL/Glenwood Academy), who ran for 132 yards on 29 carries. BJ Sherrill (Cleveland, NC/W. Rowan HS) threw for only 104 yards on 7-of-15 passing, but tossed scoring strikes of 24 yards to Gary Williams (Southport, NC/S. Brunswick HS) and 21 yards to Diante Hodges (Fayetteville, NC/Smith HS).
Jacquan Marsh (Goose Creek, SC) led a Brevard ground game that churned out 290 yards. The freshman ran for 105 yards and a score. Jordan Ollis (Columbus, NC) picked up another 77 yards and a touchdown. Watts had three receptions for 57 yards.
Catawba marched 65 yards in seven plays on the game's opening drive that culminated in Sherrill's pass to Williams. The point-after was missed, leaving the Indians up 6-0. Brevard answered with its own 65 yard drive. All the yards came on the ground with Ollis scoring from three yards out. The Tornados also failed to convert a PAT and the game was tied at 6-6.
LJ McCray (Charlotte, NC/Harding HS) returned the ensuing kickoff 84 yards for a score to give the Indians a 13-6 edge after the extra point. It marked McCray's school-record third career kickoff return for a touchdown. Brevard was denied twice in the red zone after that and Catawba failed to cash in on a late first half fumble when Sherrill was intercepted by Jacob McCleery (Columbia, SC) at the one.
Brevard pulled even late in the third quarter when Marsh capped a 74-yard drive on a one-yard run. Catawba answered on its next possession with Sherrill connecting with Hodges with 12:17 remaining. The Indians missed another extra point, leaving the score at 19-13. Jumal Rolle (Wilson, NC/Beddingfield HS) ended a Tornado drive with 3:26 left on his league-leading sixth interception, but Brevard held and nearly won the game on the final drive.
Cory Johnson (Fayetteville, NC/Britt HS) moved within six tackles of breaking John Williams' school record of 134 stops in a season. Johnson made 19 against Brevard, marking the fifth straight game he has posted double-digits in tackles with a whopping total of 87 tackles in the span. McCray and Ed Robinson (Callahan, FL/Paxon School) each added 10 tackles.
Michael Gruber (Walterboro, SC) led Brevard with 13 tackles. Billy Muscatello (Lakeland, FL) racked up 10 stops.
