No. 17: Baseball players Chris Dula and Nick Lomascolo selected in the MLB Draft
On June 8, 2013, Catawba baseball players Chris Dula and Nick Lomascolo were selected in the 2013 Major League Baseball Draft. Dula was a 25th round pick by the Texas Ranges, while Lomascolo went to the St. Louis Cardinals in 33rd round.
SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba baseball players Chris Dula (Troutman, NC/S. Iredell HS) and Nick Lomascolo (Mooresville, NC/Lake Norman HS) were both selected in last weekend’s Major League Baseball Draft. The two make the eighth and ninth Catawba players drafted since 2008.
Dula, a junior, was picked in the 25th round by the Texas Rangers. He is the first Catawba player drafted by the Rangers. Although he worked just a few innings on the mound for the Indians as a freshman in 2011, Dula was drafted as a pitcher.
Lomascolo became the fourth Catawba player drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals, but the first since Chris Kelly in 1998. Lomascolo, a senior, set school marks for wins and strikeouts in a career.
Catawba has produced 20 draft picks since 1970 with Brian Boltz being the highest pick, going in the second round to the Atlanta Braves in 1989. Mike Dickens was the school’s first-ever pick as he went in the fourth round to the Cincinnati Reds in 1970.
