Women's Basketball rolls to 11th straight win

SALISBURY, NC -- Catawba College, ranked #1 in the South Atlantic Region, ran away from visiting Newberry and recorded an 89-41 win in South Atlantic Conference women’s basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The Lady Indians improve to 14-3 overall and 5-0 in the SAC with their 11th straight win. Newberry falls to 2-14 and 0-5. Catawba began to pull after five minutes as the ladies went on a 10-0 run to lead 21-8 with 11:33 remaining. Catawba would push the lead to 18 and took a 36-20 lead to the break. Catawba would start the second half on a 17-4 run to break the game wide open. Junior Danyel Locklear (Pembroke, NC) led Catawba, posting her sixth double-double of the year with 20 points and 13 rebounds. Senior Lynn Morancie (Houston, TX) followed with 16 points and added six steals. Newberry was led by Shirloyn Johnson (Irmo, SC), who had eight points and nine rebounds. Brandy Carland (Arden, NC) also added eight points. Catawba held a 48-38 edge on the boards, while Newberry committed 33 turnovers and shot just 24.6% from the field. Catawba scored 50 points off the Newberry turnovers. Catawba hit on 60% of its shots in the last half to finish at 49% and connected on 21-of-27 at the line. #####
