Men's Basketball rips Newberry 71-48
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College held Newberry to 27% shooting and recorded a 71-48 win in South Atlantic Conference men's basketball action on Saturday afternoon at Goodman Gym. The win improves Catawba to 7-11 overall and 2-3 in the SAC, while Newberry falls to 4-13 and 1-4. Catawba grabbed control from the start. After surrendering the opening basket, Catawba went on a 16-2 run to open a 12-point lead with 12:36 to play. Newberry got within 10 only once after that at 18-9 with 9:28 to play before a three-pointer by Kevin Petty (Sanford, NC) ignited a 13-3 run to blow the game open.
Catawba led 38-17 at the break as Newberry connected on just 5-of-22 shots and had 12 turnovers. Catawba would then hold Newberry scoreless for the opening five minutes of the second half to take a commanding 51-17 lead, which marked the Tribes largest lead.
Brian Carter (Alexandria, VA) paced Catawba with 18 points and added nine rebounds. Helgi Magnusson (Reykjavik, ICELAND) added 11 points and eight rebounds as 11 Indians took part in the scoring. Newberry finished the game with just 12 field goals in 45 attempts, but would cashed in at the line, going 24-of-36. Rashaad Carter (N. Charleston, SC) was the only Newberry player to reach double figures as he had 20 points and nine rebounds.
