HOLLY SPRINGS, NC -- The Coastal Plain League announced today that Asheboro Copperheads ace John Tuttle has been named the 2013 Rawlings CPL Pitcher of the Year.  Tuttle will be a senior on the Catawba College baseball team in 2014.

Tuttle, a 6-1, 190-pound junior from Catawba College flirted with the all-time league record of 10 wins in a regular season by finishing with a 9-0 record and impressive 0.78 ERA. In eight starts, the right-hander pitched 58 innings of work, surrendering just eight runs - five earned - on 36 hits. Meanwhile, he walked only 12 and struck out 50. He also was responsible for a complete game shutout (June 15 vs. High Point-Thomasville) in addition to combining on three other shutouts during the summer. Tuttle featured a 0.83 WHIP and opposing batters hit a mere .174 against him.

The Asheboro ace started out the season by throwing 31 2/3 consecutive scoreless innings. It wasn’t until June 29 at Forest City that he finally gave up a run - surrendering three runs - two earned - in seven innings of work, while he still struck out eight and earned his fifth win of the season.

Of his regular season statistics, Tuttle finished in the Top 5 in the league of five different categories: ERA (1st), wins (1st) opposing batting average (3rd), fewest runs allowed (tied-3rd), and fewest earned runs allowed (tied-1st). Further, his 0.78 ERA was tied for the fourth best mark in CPL history, while his nine wins was tied for second most in league history.

At the All-Star break, Tuttle not only earned a spot on the roster, but was named the starting pitcher of the West Division CPL All-Stars. He pitched two innings of shutout baseball, walked one and struck out one. Additionally, he was also a two-time selection as the Rawlings CPL Pitcher of the Week in weeks two and three of the regular season. During week two, Tuttle pitched eight innings to help Asheboro complete a combined shutout on June 4 at Edenton. He shut down a Steamers’ offense that had totaled 26 runs and 32 hits over their previous two games. He allowed only five hits and walked none on his way to an 0.63 WHIP for the week. Tuttle followed in week three by pitched a complete game shutout and only gave up one hit in the process. He pitched a dominant game with seven strikeouts against just one walk and also held High-Point Thomasville to a .048 batting average.

Tuttle helped the Copperheads win both the West Division first and second half championships, as well as post the most wins in team history with 35. Asheboro entered the postseason as the top seed in the West, but fell to Gastonia in the first round.
