Women's Soccer Drops Opener on Late Goal
SALISBURY, NC -- Belmont Abbey sophomore Meghan Philip scored on a breakaway with just over a minute remaining to lift the visiting Crusaders to a 1-0 win over Catawba in women’s soccer action on Thursday night at Frock Field. It marked the opener for both teams.
With overtime looming, Philip raced onto a ball just over the midfield line and was able to beat Catawba keeper Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS) with a low shot across the box into the bottom left corner. It marked the first win for Belmont Abbey at Frock Field and was the third straight 1-0 contest between the teams in Salisbury.
Belmont Abbey had two breakaway chances in the opening half, both coming from Ananda Gebreyesus, but she was unable to convert. Catawba had several opportunities on second-half corner kicks, but could not capitalize and the Crusaders seized the game on the late counter attack.
The Crusaders held a 10-4 edge in shots, but put only four on goal. Pawlowski and Belmont Abbey keeper Hannah Kohls each recorded three saves. Catawba held a 6-5 edge in corner kicks.
Catawba returns to action at Frock Field on Saturday as they tangle with UNC Pembroke at 6 p.m.
