Stimson's OT Winner Lifts Men's Soccer to Opening Win
WILSON, NC -- Freshman Declan Stimson (Adelaide, AUSTRALIA/Trinity College HS) scored six minutes into overtime to give Catawba a 2-1 win over host Barton in its men’s soccer season opener on Saturday night at the Barton Soccer Field. The Bulldogs fall to 0-2.
Stimson converted off a free kick with assists from Kenny Bonilla (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS) and Domhnall Minogue (Wicklow, IRELAND/Presentation HS). It was the last of 16 shots for the Catawba Indians, including 13 after the break. Barton had eight shots on the night and held a 7-4 edge in corners.
The teams were scoreless at the break, but Bonilla struck just over a minute into the second half to put Catawba on top. The lead was short-lived as Barton answered just two minutes later, getting an equalizing from Donte DeLuca.
Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS/NC Central) made one save in goal for Catawba as Barton put just two shots on goal. His counterpart, Vasily Yakimkin of Barton, made four saves.
Catawba travels to Anderson next Saturday as the Indians open league play at Anderson with a 3:30 pm kickoff.
