Strike From Iwanicki Lifts Women's Soccer over UNC Pembroke in OT Win
SALISBURY, NC – Catawba College senior Amy Iwanicki (Calgary, ALB, CANADA/St. Francis/Tenn.-Martin) lifted the Lady Indians over UNC Pembroke with an overtime goal in the 103rd minute of women’s soccer action on Saturday night at Frock Field. Both teams now stand at 1-1 on the season.
The teams battled back and forth all game but the defenses prevailed in limiting shots on goal. Mary Kirkman (Burlington, NC/Williams HS) threatened to score for Catawba in the 63rd minute with a shot from the left side that glanced off the top of the crossbar.
In the first overtime, the Braves came close on a shot of their own as Clair Tracy (Rhinelander, WI) hit the post before being deflected out of bounds.
In the final overtime period, Iwanicki scored the winner with a one-two combination with Juliana Conte (Hampton, ONT, CANADA/Holy Trinity Catholic) to drive it home from the left of the penalty spot.
Catawba keeper Angelica Pawlowski (Las Vegas, NV/Bishop Gorman HS) recorded eight saves on the night. UNC Pembroke’s Brittney Bennett recorded two saves of her own. Catawba held a 9-3 edge in corner kicks.
Catawba returns to action on September 11 as they travel to Lees-McRae for a 5 p.m. kickoff.
