Women's Soccer Blanked by Lees-McRae
BANNER ELK, NC -- Lees-McRae scored a goal early in the second half and claimed a 1-0 win over visiting Catawba in women's soccer action on Wednesday night at Tate Field. The Bobcats improve to 1-2, while the Catawba Indians fall to 1-2.
After a scoreless first half that included a near 50-minute lightning delay, the Bobcats got on the board in the 51st minute on a tally from Sarah Mahar. Mahar ran onto a ball played forward by Mallory Overholt and was able to chip over Catawba keeper Bethany Davis (Salisbury, MD/Parkside HS).
Catawba pressed late, but could not come up with the equalizer. The Bobcats had a 10-8 edge in shots, but only put three on goal. Four of Catawba's tries were on target. Each team had three corner kicks. Davis had a pair of saves for the Lady Indians, Kaitlyn Briggs made four saves in posting the clean sheet for Lees-McRae.
Catawba will open conference play on Saturday as the Lady Indians travel to Anderson for a 1 p.m. kickoff.
