Volleyball Rallies Back To Grab First Win of Season

BREVARD, NC -- Catawba overcame a shaky start to post its first win of the season with a four-set win against host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Gym.  The Catawba Indians claimed the win 23-25, 25-12, 25-12 and 25-18 to improve to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC.  The Tornados fall to 3-3 and 0-2.

Brevard got out to a 7-2 lead in set one before Catawba responded to pull even at eight-all.  The set was tied at 10-10 when the Tornados used three straight points to take the lead for good.  The Lady Indians found themselves down 19-14, but kept fighting and got within a point at 23-22 on an ace by Caitlin Turner (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory HS).  Fatima Gharachorloo kept Brevard on top as she killed off the last two Tornado points.

The Tornados took the momentum into the second set to build a 7-4 lead after an ace from Bailey Hayes.  Following a timeout, Catawba took over.  The Lady Indians reeled off eight straight points for a 12-7 edge.  Morant served two aces in the run.  Catawba put it away late, scoring nine of the last 10 points.

Catawba stayed hot in set three as Howard had a pair of kills to help the Lady Indians to a 7-2 edge.  A kill from Erin Rollins had Brevard within 9-7 until a Morant kill started a 12-1 run that put the set out of reach.  Lanier and Howard each had two kills in the run, while Frabotta served two aces.

An ace from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) and two kills from Hopper sent Catawba to an early 6-2 lead in set four.  An ace from Meredith Furr (Concord, NC/Cox Mill HS) made it 9-3.  Frabotta had a kill and an ace in a five point run that gave Catawba a 17-9 lead.  Brevard pulled within 21-18 on a kill from Jasmine Robinson, but Catawba scored the final four points.

Gharachorloo led Brevard with 15 kills, while Rollins added 11.  Aleksandra Vrvilo collected 11 digs.  Hayes served a pair of aces and handed out 23 assists.  Catawba hit at 54% in the middle two sets to take over, while the Tornados responded at just 10%.
