Volleyball Rallies Back To Grab First Win of Season
BREVARD, NC -- Catawba overcame a shaky start to post its first win of the season with a four-set win against host Brevard in South Atlantic Conference volleyball action on Saturday afternoon at Boshamer Gym. The Catawba Indians claimed the win 23-25, 25-12, 25-12 and 25-18 to improve to 1-3 overall and 1-1 in the SAC. The Tornados fall to 3-3 and 0-2.
Alex Hopper (Madison, NC/McMichael HS) and Bri Howard (Graham, NC/S. Alamance HS) each posted 11 kills to help lead the Lady Indians, while Haley Lanier (Burgaw, NC/Pender Co. HS) added 10 kills. Setter Kaytee Frabotta (Sterling Heights, MI/Henry Ford II HS) delivered a solid match with six kills, 36 assists, four aces, 10 digs and three blocks. Erin Morant (Bealeton, VA/Liberty HS) had four aces and three blocks with Hopper also collecting three blocks in the win.
Brevard got out to a 7-2 lead in set one before Catawba responded to pull even at eight-all. The set was tied at 10-10 when the Tornados used three straight points to take the lead for good. The Lady Indians found themselves down 19-14, but kept fighting and got within a point at 23-22 on an ace by Caitlin Turner (Chesapeake, VA/Hickory HS). Fatima Gharachorloo kept Brevard on top as she killed off the last two Tornado points.
The Tornados took the momentum into the second set to build a 7-4 lead after an ace from Bailey Hayes. Following a timeout, Catawba took over. The Lady Indians reeled off eight straight points for a 12-7 edge. Morant served two aces in the run. Catawba put it away late, scoring nine of the last 10 points.
Catawba stayed hot in set three as Howard had a pair of kills to help the Lady Indians to a 7-2 edge. A kill from Erin Rollins had Brevard within 9-7 until a Morant kill started a 12-1 run that put the set out of reach. Lanier and Howard each had two kills in the run, while Frabotta served two aces.
An ace from McKenzie Garrison (Newton, NC/Maiden HS) and two kills from Hopper sent Catawba to an early 6-2 lead in set four. An ace from Meredith Furr (Concord, NC/Cox Mill HS) made it 9-3. Frabotta had a kill and an ace in a five point run that gave Catawba a 17-9 lead. Brevard pulled within 21-18 on a kill from Jasmine Robinson, but Catawba scored the final four points.
Gharachorloo led Brevard with 15 kills, while Rollins added 11. Aleksandra Vrvilo collected 11 digs. Hayes served a pair of aces and handed out 23 assists. Catawba hit at 54% in the middle two sets to take over, while the Tornados responded at just 10%.
Catawba returns to action on Friday as the Lady Indians host nationally-ranked Wingate at 7 p.m.
