Second Half Surge Pushes Anderson to 3-1 Victory over Men's Soccer
ANDERSON, SC -- The Catawba men's soccer team opened South Atlantic Conference play with 3-1 loss to host Anderson University on Saturday afternoon at Trojan Stadium. The Indians fall to 1-1 on the season and 0-1 in conference play. Anderson improves to 4-0 and 1-0, respectively.
Both teams fought through the first half but were unable to score. Anderson’s Henrique Gazzi broke the tie just 2:26 into the second half on a cross from Benoit Torres.
Just four minutes later the Trojans scored again with an Aaron Roberson breakaway goal. Anderson moved to a 3-0 advantage after the ball bounced around the box before finding Andre Carle with the help of Paul von Hinueber.
In the final five minutes of play Trojan’s Stefan Veljovic received a red card that would give Catawba’s Domhnall Minogue (Greystones, IRELAND/Presentation) a chance to convert on a penalty kick. Minogue was successful on the attempt against goalie Bo Hoag.
The Indians outshot Anderson 14-9 in the loss. Hoag finished with five saves while Catawba’s Frankie Cardelle (Salisbury, NC/Salisbury HS/NC Central) was only able to stop two shots. The tribe also committed six offside to Anderson’s one.
Catawba will return home on Wednesday, September 18th to take on Pfeiffer. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 pm.
